Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained operational.
